Service Description

Learn how to craft a beautiful and dynamic stage presentation using the various elements of Kalbelia dance. Includes floor work, skirt work and a variety of steps. Steps will be reviewed from the previous 12 week course while adding more variations. (Attendance of the previous course is not required to attend.) Kalbelia dance is a traditional folk dance created by the Kalbelia community of Rajasthan, India. Kalbelia are not familiar with Romany. They still call themselves “Gypsies”. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan is the gateway to the Romany Trail. The Kalbelia did not pass through the gateway. They remain in Rajasthan. Kalbeliya, “the snake charmers dance” is a folk dance from Rajasthan, India by the Kalbeliya community. The steps mimic the movements of the Cobra. It is fun, lively, folkloric, improvisational and non-technical. It is characterized by rhythmic stomps, hip movements and kicks, ever-changing hand movements, spinning, and dancing with partners. It is a dance for fun and celebration. This class will focus on the foot work and hand movement commonly used in Kalbeliya dance. Plus basic steps.
